If the spark plugs are firing at the wrong time, or something has happened to cause the camshaft to no longer be in sync with the crankshaft, your Kuga won’t start. There will usually be OBDII codes associated with timing-related problems, but not always. P0013 is a common camshaft position-related code. The crankshaft sensor can go bad as well.

See if an engine sensor was not reading correctly the engine would still crank and turn over but without starting. It would do this until the starter overheated or the battery drained. So if you are only cranking for a few seconds then stopping this would be an electrical issue in the starter circuit.

Here's how I did it. My 97 5.0 has the tow package / tranny cooler which is kind of in the way. (0) Prepare to get really gicky. (1) Remove the serpentine belt (15mm on the tensioner) (2) Remove the tensioner (2 @ 10mm). Go ahead; just do it now. (3) Clean all the glop off the crank sensor that so you can actually see it.

Remove the front wheel. Secure your vehicle with a good set of jack stands and block a tire so your car doesn’t roll. Remove the plastic wheel well liner. It is held with several plastic clips, 8mm or 10 mm nuts, depending on the Mazda model. Locate the crankshaft position sensor. Unplug the electrical connector.
TIP 1: The CKP sensor is located right behind the crankshaft pulley. TIP 2: The battery in your Ford Ranger (Mazda B4000) must be fully charged before you begin the CKP sensor test. TIP 3: You'll need to jack up the vehicle to access to the CKP sensor. Use jack stands to hold it up in the air.
